WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR DERMAL FILLERS

Elective dermal fillers are suitable for people with mild to moderate volume loss in areas of the face, cheeks, lips, jaw, ear lobes, neck and hands. Both men and women are equally good candidates for dermal fillers. They are a good alternative as a minimally invasive, non-surgical approach in improving appearance. People who are in good physical health and do not have any underlying health conditions that could affect healing are candidates. Also, those who are committed to maintaining good skin health and have realistic goals for improvement of appearance. Other factors include nonsmokers.

HOW SOON WILL I NOTICE THE RESULTS OF MY DERMAL FILLER TREATMENT

Dermal fillers add volume area treated and changes can be instantly visible. It may take few hours for redness and minor swelling at the injection sites to dissipate. However, it can take 10 to 14 days for product to settle and intermittent swelling can be a factor.

ARE DERMAL FILLERS SAFE?

There has been a major shift in cosmetic medicine towards less invasive procedures and cosmetic surgeries. As a minimally invasive procedure, elective dermal fillers serve as a better safety profile, however, it is still a medical procedure. Most fillers are made of synthetic Hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance already found in your body and the body eventually absorbs it without problems. Fillers are not suggested for those who have history of severe allergic reactions of any kind or those with allergies to Lidocaine. It is important to know that fillers are done with the use of very fine needles, so  those with severe needle phobias have this to consider as well.

WILL THE RESULTS OF FILLERS LOOK NATURAL?

Fillers are meant to enhance and contour areas that have had areas of volume loss or where lines and wrinkles are starting to develop. Results are typically meant to be subtle, while adding fullness to areas of concern. Our goal is to always maintain a natural desirable result. In many cases, it may be ideal to have multiple visits to obtain optimal outcomes. Conservative measures are taken to avoid too much filler or swollen over filled appearance.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?

Filler formulas are designed to last a specific amount of time, ranging from 6-18 months. Length of longevity can vary with the amount of product used and the area it is injected into. For example, in areas that experience a lot of movement due to eating, talking and smiling, the product may not last as long as less active areas.

IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME AFTER THE DERMAL FILLER PROCEDURE?

Fillers are not considered a surgical treatment, so there is essentially no downtime necessary. Many may even resume work and routine activities immediately after.  Although we do encourage 24-48 hours of selective downtime to optimize healing, such as remaining elevated, intermittent topical ice and avoiding intense physical activity. Also we encourage general precautions over 2 weeks following procedure to give product optimal “settling time.”

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists the following “conditions” you may experience after dermal filler procedure:
 
 • An “overfilled” appearance to treated areas
 • Swelling or bruising ranging from mild to severe
 • Temporary numbness or redness
 • Palpable lumps or hard areas at injection sites
 • Hypersensitivity reaction that can seem like an allergic reaction with hives and swelling
 
They also mention most of these are easily alleviated, but some may require more aggressive treatment with medications or injections.
 
Other possible facial filler side effects and potential risks include:
 
 • Delayed allergic reactions
 • Chronic inflammation or infection
 • Granulomas (lumps of immune cells clustered under the skin)
 • Loss of muscular function
 • Spider veins
 • Thick, raised scars
 • Unexplained immune reactions
 • Migration to unintended areas of the face
 
Rare, but severe reactions can also occur. If the filler is accidentally injected into a vein or artery, it can cut of necessary blood supply to surrounding tissue.
